Finding the best herbal treatment for joint pain is a matter of determining which herbs work best for your individual symptoms. In general, herbs can be classified into those that ease pain, promote healing and prevent recurrence of symptoms. The most effective herbal remedies for pain and inflammation are those with anti-inflammatory properties and those that relieve pain and stimulate healing. Some of the most popular herbs for easing joint pain are St. John’s Wort, ginger, and Turmeric. Each of these herbs has a role to play in maintaining good health, but each also has exceptional properties for use as a natural remedy for joint pain.

Ginger and Turmeric: The ancient Chinese herb ginger has been used for hundreds of years to ease pain related to inflammation, stiffness, and arthritis. Ginger works by relaxing the capillaries in the body, which allows the blood to better carry oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. This allows the muscles to more easily absorb needed vitamins and minerals. It has also been shown to relieve muscle spasms, making it ideal for those suffering from aching Joint Pain. Turmeric is another popular herb for this purpose and is well-known for its anti-inflammatory properties.

Ashwagandha: Also known as Indian ginseng, ashwagandha relieves chronic conditions, including joint inflammation. It also reduces pain and stiffness of the joints, while promoting the healthy function of the immune system. Like ginger, it also has anti-inflammatory properties. Unlike many other herbs for joint pain, ashwagandha is relatively safe to take if you know it will not cause side effects.

Kava: Famous for its ability to relax the mind and nerves, kava is an herbal remedy that promotes mental clarity and a feeling of well-being. It works to improve overall nervous system health, including the ability of the immune system to fight disease. Like other herbs for joint pain inflammation, it may also ease the discomfort of arthritis. However, like all herbal treatments, kava can have side effects and should be taken with caution. Its use may also cause anxiety and insomnia in some people. As always, when taking any medication, be sure to check with your doctor.

Ginger: Often used in Chinese and Indian cuisine, ginger promotes good cardiovascular health and has anti-inflammatory properties as well. It may provide some relief from the symptoms of joint pain caused by inflammation. However, do not take ginger orally. Instead, crush fresh ginger and mix with water. Drink the mixture several times a day.

Artichoke Extract: Some research shows that artichokes may reduce the symptoms of arthritis. A paper on this subject was published in the Journal of the American Medical Associations. In addition to reducing pain and inflammation, artichoke extracts may also help to protect the cartilage of the joint. So, if you choose to take an artichoke extract, make sure you check with your doctor first.

Capsaicin: This is a spice in chili peppers that produces heat. It has been shown to provide relief from inflammation and pain, as well as improve the functioning of the joints. One study showed that capsaicin prevented the formation of clots in the arteries. Another study reported that capsaicin decreased markers of oxidative stress in the blood. Thus, capsaicin may be beneficial for those suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, as well as osteoarthritis of the knee and other types of arthritis.

Feverfew: Feverfew is another herb that may ease the symptoms of pain in joint and inflammation. Its action is similar to that of ibuprofen, and it soothes inflammation and pain. However, it is not recommended for arthritis of the knee or other painful conditions. For more information on whether feverfew may help you, talk to your doctor.
